The 2013 SEMA show is on November 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and that means it’s celebrity time at the PPG Automotive Refinish exhibit. The most colourful superstars of the custom car, motorcycle and drag racing world – Charley Hutton, Bobby Alloway, Tom and Mitch Kelly, Dave Perewitz and Kenny Youngblood – are set to appear at PPG booth 24501, and they’ll be ready to discuss their work, sign autographs and talk about why they prefer using PPG products.
These talented painters are known for their creative use of colour, placing their work light years away from the ordinary. Each has his own distinctive style and flair, earning acclaim, respect, even a little bit of envy within the industry. Charley Hutton has garnered a wealth of honours for his creative design schemes. His resume includes three prestigious Ridler Awards, several Street Rod of the Year and Custom Rod of the Year awards, an America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award and many other major prizes. Hutton’s standing in the painting universe was soundly established with appearances on the Discovery Channel’s American Hot Rod, TLC’s Overhaulin’, and on Hot Rod TV. His Nampa, Idaho-based shop, Charley Hutton’s Color Studio, uses PPG Automotive Refinish products exclusively.
Cars that feature an edgy, aggressive stance are Bobby Alloway’s specialty. He builds them at Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop in Louisville, Tennessee, where he blends automotive craftsmanship with muscle car attitude. Alloway’s cars swagger with power and are usually painted black. His boatload of awards includes America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, Goodguys’ Street Rod and Street Machine of the Year and an exalted Ridler honour. He was named Builder of the Year at the Detroit Autorama in 2011 and has been inducted into the National Rod & Custom Car Hall of Fame. The PPG Deltron product line is Alloway’s paint preference. Alloway will also appear at the Hot Rod Industry Alliance booth.
Tom and Mitch Kelly are the driving force behind Kelly & Son the Crazy Painters. The father-and-son team’s shop – located in Bellflower, California – is a huge part of southern California’s cutting-edge car scene. Tom is a gifted striper and muralist; son Mitch is known for his fantastic, no-artistic-limits paint designs. The two have turned out dozens of custom trucks, dragsters, motorcycles and cars. The Kellys use the PPG Vibrance Collection waterborne products to create their extraordinary colours.
Dave Perewitz, the “King of Flames,” is one of America’s top-echelon motorcycle builders and customizers. Perewitz Cycle Fabrication in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, turns out unique creations and exceptionally imaginative flame designs. Perewitz has taken part in the Discovery Channel’s Biker Build-Off and recently started applying his custom concepts to street rods. Perewitz strongly favors PPG products for his work.
Kenny Youngblood is respected as one of drag racing’s most prolific graphic artists and has been called “the father of modern day race-car designs.” Youngblood Motorsport Gallery in Orange, California, serves as a showcase for his work as well as that of other top artists in the field. His art has been seen on the pages of virtually every motorsport publication and featured on numerous TV shows including Monster Garage. His paintings can also be seen at the Hot Rod Grille in Las Vegas.
