Community fundraiser deemed a ‘smashing’ success

Jagger Blake donated his allowance to take a turn swinging a sledgehammer for charity.

Eccles Auto Service turned the grand opening of its third Dundas, Ont. location into a fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation on Saturday.

In addition to a day of fun games and activities, over 200 community supporters picked up a sledgehammer for a charity car smash in support of Margaret’ s Place Hospice.

As a side benefit, business founder Bruce Eccles got to showcase his new six-bay garage at 123 Hatt St. in the valley town.

“Dundas is a community that cares. It’s a proud moment when you can bring people together for something that matters,” said Eccles. “To see even the little ones save up their allowance money and donate it in order to take a swing for a great cause, what more can you ask?”

Shop owner Scott Eccles said the event raised $1,545 for the new hospice, which is set to begin construction soon.

“People know when they come to Eccles Auto Service, we aren’t just servicing their vehicles, we’re helping families and our community enjoy their best life,” said Scott.

Don Davidson, president and CEO of the St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation, said creative ideas like the car smash are a great way to raise awareness and money for community needs.

“We’re always open to new creative ideas like Bruce and Scott’s,” said Davidson. “Once Margaret’s Place opens, our foundation is responsible for funding a significant portion of hospice operations. Having community members who care enough to get involved will help us support more patients and families.”

The event drew such a positive response that Eccles Auto Service has decided to make it an annual event.
