Technicians need to be challenged and those that are TRUE diagnostic techs will not use AI. With all this technology we are being trained to not think which is wrong on so many levels. I look at how techs are using diagnostic web sites to do their work for them. When they do this they don’t learn anything. They just want to get the job done and move on to the next one as fast as possible (flat rate)

Comment on Canada bans lead wheel weights by Geoff https://www.autoserviceworld.com/canada-bans-lead-wheel-weights/#comment-240466 Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:10:56 +0000 https://www.autoserviceworld.com/?p=1003839180#comment-240466 “Wheel weights frequently fall off the vehicle during normal operation, and they eventually wear down to lead dust,” – Citation needed.

We received a call from a federal department probably a decade ago, inquiring how we dispose of lead wheel weights. We explained we collected and recycled them – they’re worth money. His response was along the lines of, “yeah, thats what everyone is telling me. I’m not sure why we’re doing this”.

Another government solution looking for a non existent problem to fix.

Comment on From the Magazine: The technician shortage may be worse than you think by J.J https://www.autoserviceworld.com/from-the-magazine-the-technician-shortage-may-be-worse-than-you-think/#comment-240446 Fri, 05 Jan 2024 01:12:46 +0000 https://www.autoserviceworld.com/?p=1003838596#comment-240446 In reply to Justin Flannery.

In 2021, I got into the automotive field with the desire of becoming a diag tech. I completed tech school, learned wiring diagrams, labscope, voltmeter, practiced on my own vehicles. A euro specialty shop hired me and honestly, I quickly began to regret my decision. The shop provided the tools and their master techs allowed me to grab whatever I needed from their huge tool collection. With each job, I began to realize that I was going to have to invest a ton of cash on tools. Sometimes, I struggled finding complete service info or wiring diagrams on certain vehicles. It was really frustrating. I ended up quitting on my 6th month and began working in a completely different field. Two years later, a new shop opened near my home. The owner had a good reputation. Well, I got a job there, in attempt to jump start my automotive career.. I ended up quitting on the 2nd week. That desire of wanting to become a diag tech (or a tech, in general) was long gone. It’s the working conditions, crappy pay, body aches, and huge tool investment that did it for me. These days, I’m no longer in automotive and looking at other career options. A lot of my former tech school classmates left the field after the first year.

I believe that the government will be wearing egg on this one when they come to the realization that Hydrogen is the future.
No one has even talked about the “kicking and screaming fight” we will be having with the petroleum industry, who by the way contribute $ millions to the political parties coffers every year.

The entire concept is not possible! Hydrogen and other alternative fuels are not even mentioned…Three main reasons why it’s a farce- 1. Energy demand would exceed capacity. 2. Enviro impact for new electric cars is massive/ Not enough lithium on the planet. (the best for the planet would in fact be to use what you have until it’s worn out, and then replace it). 3. The climate change crisis is a hoax, especially in Canada where we have a negative carbon foot print…Sure electric cars are an option but the “mandates” are not achievable or even possible.

It is fair for BC Hydro to recover their charger costs by increasing the kWh cost to amortize those costs over 20-30 years or whatever is realistic. But I doubt this should be by doubling or tripling their home charge of $.10 per kWh.

Yes, right out of school I was making more money than my college educated counterparts, but as the years have gone on most if not all of them are making 50-100% more than me.
In addition to compensation there is a clear cultural difference. Office workers are treated as professionals (generally) and have comfortable working environments, work from home partially, and do not have to spend a dime of their own money (yes I am talking about the $100-$300 weekly tool payments I had for years) to complete the job.

We can talk all day about vehicles being big computers and having all sorts of technology, but at the end of the day you have to be equally interested in getting dirty, hurt, bleeding, and working on things that were not designed to be easily serviceable and are incredibly frustrating.

Moving jobs consistently and working my way into management was the only way I was able to feel respected, treated as a professional, and not in pain at the end of a work week.

Not everyone is cut out to be a manager or sit at a desk all day, but there are certainly more lucrative trades that do not require as many different skill sets or capital to get started.

Not sure how to correct this issue, but that is my rant.

The mobile tire change people? Not a fan either. Consumers should have their vehicle done in a proper Garage or shop setting so critical mistakes are not made out freezing in the snow in somebodys driveway.

The job, in these cases has to be put on a lift to remove/replace the necessary part/components in order to access them. I agree that many repairs/procedures can be dome mobily, but major or challenging ones are more efficiently done in the shop.

Try diagnosing a vehicle and repairing it at minus 35 to minus 40 degree weather that we get here in Canada. Your hands will freeze before you even get to scan codes. So if you are in Arizona, California, or Texas, you may not need a brick and mortar location, but for most of us, I like to work in my heated shop and not freeze to death.

Read the details properly… she was hit by a car joe certified, nothing to do with her. And with respect to other “master techs”, who replied here, ultimately the tech is responsible, sorry, that’s where it ends. If anyone asks for a safety and you overlook a failure item, you are ultimately guilty, all the others involved should be guilty as well. They admitted to being complacent in finding and referring a tech that would do the dirty. If it was gun trafficking theyd all be charged… Think of the responsibility you have with this power. I know dealers who go to friends who do safety, and tell their friend “yeah the vehicle is all good, pass no problem, not one moment spent on the car. Safety issued. Where safety issues are 100% a concern!!! How is that in any way any less negligent than selling meth to kids? It warrants a criminal charge, simple.

This article should be about the rise in mobile diagnostic technicians due to the rampant incompetence of too many shops and the technicians that work for them. Diagnosis over the phone is as ridiculous as is promoting it by writing an article supporting it.

Car repair costs are getting to be more expensive, too. If you are in need of a car repair, look for coupons for the facility that you have chosen. You can even ask if they have any ongoing specials for the service that you need. There are helpful tricks, you just have to look around and inquire with others.

It’s alarming to learn that, despite the plethora of training resources available, the market’s rapid growth and the lure of lower prices may compromise safety practices.

What were you doing running an Elvis Presley wedding Chappell out of your shop in Vegas? Please, you obviously didn’t know how to run a shop then, and pretty sure you don’t know how to run a shop now. I doubt very much you uncovered six figured losses in some of your clients shops when you couldn’t even see unrelated expenses on your business visa account.
